Just a quick update about a couple of interesting things from the week.

Sunday night I joined some family friends (the Shachars) for a celebration at their synagogue -- they were "welcoming" a new Torah. It was given to the synagogue by one of its members and dedicated to the donor's wife, who passed away one year ago. What a wonderful way to remember and honor someone's life! There was klezmer music, lots of dancing, and a very special service (although it was in Hebrew, so I only picked up parts here and there).

Mark and I continued with our Wednesday HUC class together and learned about the history, patterns, and challenges of aliayh. Aliyah, which literally translates to "going up," is the term used when someone moves to Israel. We spent the day at Ulpan Etzion here in Jerusalem. Ulpan Etzion was the first ulpan (language course) in Israel and also serves as an absorption center for new immigrants. The ulpan system in Israel, which is now quite extensive, was based on Ulpan Etzion. They have had thousands and thousands of people come through as they begin a new life in Israel. Very good day.

Last night Mark left to the States for 10 days. He'll be in Rhode Island for a conference on informal Jewish education, then on to Denver for a few days visiting family, friends, and shopping for a few items we can't find in Israel. Too bad there wasn't room in his suitcase, as I would love to see the "Miller crew," as well. He promised to bring lots of hugs back, though. :) I'm really happy for him and look forward to hearing his stories when he gets back.

All for now. I'm off for a day with my friend, Nili.

Take good care.
Love to you and yours,
Rachel Ann
